Obituary: Kaye Sharon Knutson

March 12, 1943 ~ March 16, 2023

Kaye Knutson, 80, of Sturgeon Bay, died on March 16, 2023.  She was born March 12, 1943, in Sturgeon Bay to Harold and Mabel (Kalms) Knutson.  She started her schooling in the one room schoolhouse at Hainesville and graduated from West Bend High School in 1961.

Kaye earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and a master’s degree in health education at Winona State University, MN.  For most of her career, she taught middle school health education.

In her earlier years, Kaye spent a lot of time outdoors, biking, camping, and fishing. She loved gardening and was a long-time member of the Master Gardeners.  As an avid reader, she collected enough books to establish a library in her home.

Kaye spent many summers in Door County and moved here permanently when she retired.  In her retirement, she enjoyed doing mosaic artwork, singing in the community choir, and doing volunteer work for TAP Theatre and the Door County Humane Society.

Kaye had a very generous heart and spirit and always found pleasure in helping others in need.  She especially treasured her family and was proud to be godmother to Wendy Vankuren, Thomas Fischer, Adam Gessert, and Matthew Polzin.

She is survived by her sister Kathleen (Sam) Cassity, Sturgeon Bay and brother Daniel (Suzy) Knutson, Iron Ridge, WI; nieces and nephews: Kris (Jessie) Knutson, Robb Gessert, Adam (Elianna) Gessert, Kelley (Jerry) Burch; great-nieces and nephews, life-long friend Jerri Fischer, and her dear four legged companion Rosa.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Bay View Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be that day from 10:00 am until the time of service.  Burial will be in Hainesville Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Bay View Lutheran Church.
