Obituary: Leland Clare Johnson

May 5, 1937 – Aug. 9, 2019

Leland Clare Johnson, 82, of Sturgeon Bay died peacefully at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay.

He was born on Washington Island, the son of Ben and Annabel (Jacobsen) Johnson. After attending Washington Island School District, he enlisted in the United States Army. Lee worked as a painter and painted all over Door County, starting from the boat house on Rock Island, the first building at Scandia Village, and worked his way to Sturgeon Bay. He was a volunteer firefighter at the Village of Sister Bay/Town of Liberty Grove Fire Department for many years. On October 28, 1989, he married Marilyn Faye Miller and together, they enjoyed traveling to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin Dells. Lee was a “jack of all trades” who loved golfing, watching baseball and boating.

Lee will be missed by his wife, Marilyn; sons, Scott (Margo) Johnson of Ellison Bay, Craig (Melanie) Johnson of Sister Bay, Adam (Liza) Johnson of Sister Bay, and Jordan (Dawn) Johnson of Baileys Harbor; step-daughters, Amy (Randy) Dickson and Tanya (Joe) Weber, both of Sturgeon Bay; grandchildren, Robyn Anderson and Brandon (Laura) Anderson, Alissa (Kevin) Martin, Ryan (Becky) Johnson, Cody (Jenny) Johnson, Dusty Johnson, and Callie Johnson, Laine (Kory) Kroubetz, and Dylan Johnson, Caitlyn Johnson, and Danyelle Johnson; step-grandchildren, Bruce Weber, Thomas Weber, and Claire Dickson; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jill (Floyd) Haines; one sister; and three brothers.

Lee’s life will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 17, 3 pm, at Bay View Lutheran Church, with Pastor Beth Macha officiating.  Military honors will follow.

THERE WILL BE NO VISITATION PRIOR TO THE MEMORIAL SERVICE.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established at Nicolet National Bank.
