Obituary: Leta Joyce Guth

Leta Joyce Guth, 86, of Sturgeon Bay, died Friday night, January 29, 2021 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay.

She was a lifelong resident of Sturgeon Bay, born April 28, 1934, the daughter of William Englebert Behringer and Lucille “Lucy” Agnes (Haen) Behringer. Leta grew up attending St. Joseph Parish in Sturgeon Bay where she received the initial sacraments of baptism, communion, and confirmation. She graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1953 and went on to study in Milwaukee for before returning home. Leta was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Robert William Guth, on October 22, 1955 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They were blessed with three children (Cynthia, Jeffrey, and Thomas) and over 43 years of marriage. Bob preceded Leta in death on November 21, 1998.

After her children were in school, Leta went to work for her good friends, Jim and Helen Jolin, at their (Jolin’s) Drug Store for several years. Her children have fond memories visiting Mom at the pharmacy and enjoying an ice cream treat. Leta went to Work for H. C. Prange Co. (in the mid-1960s) and worked in advertising, marketing, and buying. As a buyer there, she was constantly flying out east and enjoyed seeing numerous holiday events in the big cities over the years. In 1978, Leta went to work for Peterson Builders, Inc. (PBI) in their quality control department and remained there until its closing in 1995.

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish and was a member of the Christian Mothers, helping serve many funeral lunches over the years. Leta had an appreciation for her flowers at home and enjoyed watching the birds eat from the feeders in her yard. She was an avid reader (romance and mystery novels were her favorite) and also liked completing her word search books. In addition to traveling for work, Leta also liked traveling throughout Wisconsin, Las Vegas, NV, Aruba, Kentucky, and also wintering in Florida in her retirement. Those who knew her, knew what a feisty spirit she was. Above all, Leta loved her family.

She will be missed by her children, Cynthia (Dan) Neuville of Sturgeon Bay, Jeffrey (Susan) Guth of Larsen, and Thomas (Carolyn Bauer) Guth of Sturgeon Bay; granddaughters, Jennifer (friend, Jim Gorring) Neuville and Kristin (Tony) Cipriani, and Sara (Chad) Sigl; great-grandchildren, Owen and Kya Sigl; Carolyn’s children, Anna (Jesse) Bourdeau, Brenda (Jeff) Romanelli, John (Anne) Bauer, and Mike Bauer; sister, Bea Delain of Keller, TX; sister-in-law, Joanne (Bill) O’Dell of Milwaukee; other relatives; and friends.

Leta was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Jessica Guth; siblings, William (June) Behringer, Helen (Gentry) Burress, Bertha (Clifford) Cardy, and Patricia (Al) Christoferson; siblings-in-law, Robert Delain and Rheta (Jerome) Ewaskowitz; and other relatives.

Her life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay with Fr. Robert Stegmann as celebrant. Leta will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bob, in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until 11:20 a.m.

Those attending the visitation and/or Mass are to wear face masks and maintain social distancing.

Memorials may be given in Leta’s name for the Wisconsin Humane Society-Door County Campus or the Alzheimer’s Association.
