Obituary: LeVaun Hope Mann

October 9, 1926 ~ August 16, 2022

LeVaun Hope Mann, 95, of Washington Island, died, Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society – Scandia Village in Sister Bay.

She was born at home on Washington Island on October 9, 1926 to William Volney Jacobsen and Emilie Eugenie (Koyen) Jacobsen. LeVaun attended grade school at Jackson Harbor School and went to high school where the Art and Nature Center is today.

She met Jerome Joseph Mann in high school. They were married on September 15, 1945 in her parents’ yard. LeVaun and Jerome were blessed with four children: Bonita, Jerry, Keith and Orion and shared over 46 years of marriage. Jerome died in May of 1992.

In November of 2001, LeVaun married Robert Brown.

She enjoyed quilting with the women at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, playing Canasta, and line dancing. At age 90, LeVaun was still coming to Mann’s Store to help on freight day putting up groceries. She was also known for making her famous rosettes and serving them at the Mann’s Store Christmas party, making sure people didn’t have more than two.

LeVaun belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Detroit Harbor Ladies Aid, and the Red Hatters.

She will be missed by her daughter and three sons, Bonita (Charles) Voight of Gills Rock, Jerry (Marlene), Keith (Cathy), and Orion (Jill), stepdaughter, Jan Wagner, all of Washington Island; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; sister, Mary Jorgensen; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

LeVaun was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Jerome Mann and Robert Brown; Grandson, Jason Mann and Great-Granddaughter, Evelyn Voight; sister and brother, Jane (Stuart) Sorenson and Duane (Mildred) Jacobsen; brother-in-law, Walt Jorgensen; and other relatives.

Her life will be honored with a memorial service held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on Washington Island with Pastor Edward Baseman officiating. LeVaun will be laid to rest on Washington Island in the Town of Washington Cemetery. The committal at the cemetery will be private for family.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.

Memorials may be given in LeVaun’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church, Jacobsen Museum, or Red Barn.
