Obituary: Lorna Bell Cornell

On May 12, 2018 Lorna passed away after a brief battle with cancer.

One of Door County’s premier artists, she received a BFA from the University of Illinois, studied at Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago.

She taught at Sunset Ridge Elementary school in Northfield, Il, was Washington Island’s first kindergarten teacher, taught Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church for 30 years, taught art at the Washington Island School and her “Paint and Sketch with Lorna” classes on the Island through NWTC were popular with all ages for over 40 years.

She won a Hallmark Award for her art while still at New Trier High School and this was only the start. She was a prolific and award winning painter and her art can be found in public and private collections all over the world. She was a founding board member of the Washington Island Art and Nature Center, and an active member of the Washington Island Art Association.

Lorna is survived by her husband, Jack, three children: Robert (Patty), Lisa (Greg McDougal) and Jeffrey and four grandchildren: Robert Ainslie Bell Cornell, Aislinn Fay Cornell, Allison Marie McDougal and Timothy John McDougal.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert A and Florence T Bell.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

The family asks that memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church on Washington Island.
