Obituary: Lucille Violet Kostka

July 20, 1929 ~ March 28, 2022

Lucille Violet Kostka (92), of Sister Bay, Wisconsin, died peacefully on March 28, 2022, at Hearthside Assisted Living in Sister Bay. She was born on July 20,1929 to Albin and Pearl Mickelson. Lucille graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1947, and then went on to get her teaching degree. There she met the love of her life, Richard Kostka and was united in marriage on June 2nd, 1951, at the Sister Bay Moravian Church. They were blessed with 65 years of marriage until Richard’s death in 2016. Their wonderful marriage produced four children.

Richard and Lucille owned and operated the Scandia Cottages in Sister Bay for 45 years. There they met many life-long friends. Lucille taught in numerous elementary schools in northern Door County that spanned 30 years. Her love of children was displayed in her dedication and talent to teach, which impacted the lives of so many children, including her own. Lucille was most happy when surrounded by her family and friends.

She was an avid gardener, a talented knitter, and quilter. There was not a craft she could not master. She always loved inviting friends and family over for a game of cards and companionship. Lucille was also an active and faithful member of the Sister Bay Moravian Church since birth. For many years she volunteered at the Scand Auxiliary, the Clearing, and the Sister Bay Historical Society as a docent.

Lucille often said, “Relationships are my greatest wealth.” Her family is comforted knowing she is now in the arms of Christ.

Her love will continue to live on the in the hearts of her four children, Kathleen (John) Parks, Steven (Amy) Kostka, Ellen (Jim) Lawlor, and Julie (Korry) Belin; her six grandchildren, Jonathan Parks, Kari (Jeffrey) Gebert, Sarah (Andy) Rostermundt, Chris (Adrienne) Kostka, Matt Belin, Katie (Matthew) Herbaugh; her eight great-grandchildren, Ellie, John Wyatt, Caleb, Avery, Noah, Lucas, Kenny and Benjamin. She is also survived by her sisters, June Bell and Betty Holland, who always provided a special bond with Lucille throughout their lives. Lucille was immensely proud of her family including numerous nieces and nephews and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.

We will miss Lucille’s beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Sometimes memories sneak out of our eyes and roll down our cheeks. We will remember Lucille, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Society – Scandia Village, Unity Hospice, and Martha Coventry at the Hearthside for all the care that was given to their mother.

A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at a later date, to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sister Bay Historical Society or the Sister Bay Moravian Church.
