Obituary: Marguerite “Peggy” Elizabeth (Slater) Van Vleet

March 20, 1933 ~ February 8, 2021

Marguerite “Peggy” Elizabeth (Slater) Van Vleet, 87, of Sister Bay, died peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Society – Scandia Village.

She was born March 20, 1933 in Port Huron, Michigan, daughter of the late Charles Vernon and Marguerite Elizabeth (Sage) Slater. Peggy graduated from Port Huron High School with the Class of 1951. She later attended Western Michigan University, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in social work in 1960. On January 13, 1962, she was united in marriage with Richard “Dick” Van Vleet in Milwaukee. In the 1980s, Dick and Peggy retired to Door County. She worked at the Wagon Trail Resort (now Rowley’s Bay Resort) in the gift shop and daycare. Peggy was a member of First Baptist Church in Sister Bay, where she participated in bible studies, music programs, and children’s ministries. She was involved in Door County Christian Women’s Club. Peggy was active with the Scandia Village Auxiliary for many years and also a member of the Women’s Ensemble of Northern Door County. Peggy was a people person who loved music and enjoyed singing and reading.

She will be missed by her brother, David (Kay) Slater; sister, Nancy Slater; stepchildren and their families, Tom (Becky) and Laurie (Steve); and many close friends, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marguerite Slater; loving husband of 56 years, Dick Van Vleet; and stepdaughter, Deborah.

Peggy’s life will be honored during a memorial service at a later date. She will be laid to rest next to Dick in Little Sister Cemetery.
