Obituary: Marion ‘Joan’ Unger

Marion “Joan” Unger, long-time resident of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin passed away, Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at the age of 83. She was born April 27, 1933 in Chicago, IL to John and Marion (Vuillaume) Shaffer.

Joan was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed gardening, traveling, painting, reading, sewing, and being with her family and friends. As a young girl, Joan spent her summers with her family enjoying North Bay on the shores of Lake Michigan.

For more than 35 years, Joan called Door County home. Prior to moving to Baileys Harbor, Joan lived in Chicago, where she graduated from Teachers College and the Art Institute of Chicago. Joan taught grammar school in Chicago. When she relocated to Door County, Joan immersed herself in the community, through family, friends, and her work as a teacher and in customer service at several local restaurants.

Survivors include her two children, H. Paul (Camille) Unger of Chicago, IL and Cheryl Merriman of Baileys Harbor, WI; granddaughter Jewls Merriman, three grandsons, Dakoda Merriman, Herman (P.J.) Unger and Colton Merriman and one great-grandson, Dustin Merriman; two sisters, Shirley Diener of Stephenville, TX and Marilyn Biel of Deerfield, IL and several nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marion, nephew James Diener and great niece Chelsea Diener.

Memorial services to honor Joan will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude in Joan’s memory.
