Obituary: Mary Dawn Gunnerson

Mary Dawn Gunnerson, 65, of Washington Island and Baileys Harbor, gained her independence from a hard fought battle with liver disease and liver cancer on June 17, Icelandic Independence Day. She was born on September 28th, 1950 on Washington Island at home to Roger W. and Esther Rosengren Gunnerson.

She started her education on Washington Island and the family moved to Waukesha, WI when she was in 8th grade. She graduated from Waukesha High School in 1969 and from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee with a BS in Dietary Sciences in 1973. After working at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, and Marinette General Hospital she returned to attend MATC for baking certification. She worked as a Baker at Findlay’s Holiday Inn for over 20 years. She also worked at Gunnerson’s Hardware Store, Gunnerson’s Kaupstadur, Chappel Formal Wear, and The Cherry Train. She spent many years as a caregiver for her parents during times of illness.

Mary is survived by a brother, Robert (Mary Beth) Gunnerson of the Villages, Florida, a nephew Carl Gunnerson, of Destin Florida, Niece, Karen Gunnerson of Hoboken, New Jersey, and sister, Ruth Gunnerson of Baileys Harbor and Washington Island, WI.

Passionate about letting other people know she was thinking of them, phone calls on birthdays, anniversaries, or other special times were a top priority. She loved letting folks know they mattered and were important in her life.

A lifelong proud Democrat, she knew that even if others didn’t agree she would always be willing to educate them on the reasons she supported an issue or candidate. She enjoyed the friendly exchanges with many folks.

A love for cars, trucks and particularly 18 wheelers was a longstanding appreciation. She took powderpuff mechanics, and took pride in gapping a spark plug or performing other minor mechanics. She loved being able to do things with Papa and being referred to as Roger’s second son.

Artistically making silk flower arrangements and sharing them with friends for special occasions brought her great joy. She also loved real flowers and had a very special appreciation for coleus.

The Door County Baseball League games were a special part of her life. Both the Baileys Harbor and Washington Island teams were who she supported. As long as she was physically able she attended every game that she could.

As limitations became greater and greater for her, it is the positive attitude and hope that she had that were an inspiration. A quiet strong faith abided. Her sense of humor and appreciation of everything being done to take care of her were expressed lovingly.

A memorial service will be held for Mary at Bethel Church on Washington Island on July 30th.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Washington Island Rescue Squad.
