Obituary: Mary “Joyce” Carlson

November 12, 1934 – April 29, 2023

Mary “Joyce” Carlson (nee Knoebel) of Baileys Harbor and Delafield died on April 29, 2023 at age 88.

Joyce was the cherished wife of Gil for 60 years, loving mother of Kristine (Kurt) Kuelthau, Erik (Ann Goh) Carlson, Keith (Linda) Carlson, Kraig (Stacey) Carlson and proud Grandma of Alyssa Kuelthau, Rachel Kuelthau, Gus Carlson, Jasper Carlson, Lukas Carlson, and Griffin Carlson. Joyce is also survived by her sister-in-law Joan (David) Knoebel, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Herbert, Paul, Charles, Tom, Daniel, and David, and sisters Elizabeth, Monica, Miriam, and Barbara.

Joyce was born on November 12, 1934, the youngest child of Herbert and Catherine (nee Walters) Knoebel. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Menomonee Falls HS. She worked as a teller at Farmers and Merchants Bank but spent most of her years as a devoted homemaker and dedicated volunteer. Joyce met Gil while on vacation in Door County and they loved spending summers at their cabin in Baileys Harbor with family and friends. Joyce enjoyed boating, traveling, cheering on the Packers and Badgers and treasured time with her children and grandchildren. She gracefully battled cancer for many years and her strength, humility, generosity, and deep Catholic faith was an example for all.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee. Interred at Baileys Harbor Cemetery. Memorial service to be held in Baileys Harbor this summer.

Memorial donations may be made to Stella Maris Parish, St. Anthony’s, or the American Cancer Society.
