Obituary: Matthew W. Holmes

June 16, 1984 ~ December 19, 2021

Matthew W. Holmes, 37 years, of Sturgeon Bay, died unexpectedly on Sunday, December 19, 2021 after suffering a heart attack brought on by covid complications.

He was born June 16, 1984, in Sturgeon Bay, son of Philip “Bill” and Rosanna (De Long) Holmes. Following high school, Matt attended NWTC. He spent many years down in Iowa and South Dakota before returning to Sturgeon Bay. For the past 6+ years, he enjoyed working at Sterling Landscape and happily assisted local restaurants with his phenomenal cooking whenever needed. Matt was a work horse and took great pride in his landscaping skills. He was particularly proud of the Graham Park project by the Oregon Street Bridge.

Matt always put the feelings of others before his own and was ready to lend a supportive hand (not toes) whenever needed. He was hilarious and used his humor to make everyone laugh. His comical personality, silly facial expressions and funny voices are unmatchable and will live on in our hearts and minds indefinitely. Matt was also an incredible cook who cooked the most amazing meals for his friends and family. His taking responsibility of the “meat” cooking for all holidays and special family events will be dearly missed. In his free time, Matt enjoyed fishing, cheering for the Michigan Wolverines and Green Bay Packers, spending time with friends, gaming, country drives and visiting Cave Point State Park.

Matt is preceded in death by his mother, Rosanna (De Long) Holmes. His surviving family include his father, Bill Holmes of Sturgeon Bay; three sisters, DeAnna Holmes, Tina (Dustin) Thalman, and Lani De Long (Jason Barbour); nieces and nephews, Mikayla, Jaydin, Buddy, Baleigh; and great-niece and nephew, Taliah and Asher.

A Celebration of Life will be held in June 2022 where all friends and family may reminisce, enjoy laughs and share memories of Matt. Details will be shared to Matt’s Facebook page once finalized.

Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC of Sturgeon Bay are assisting the family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Matt may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
