Obituary: Nancy R. Brey

Nancy BreyNancy Ruth Brey, 67, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Sunday evening, November 1, 2015, at her home with her loving family at her side, following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 16, 1948, in Green Bay, the second oldest of eight children to Joseph and Claire (Matson) Brey. Nancy graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1966 and attended UW-Green Bay studying business. She worked in Las Vegas, NV, as a regional manager of convenience and gas station stores before returning in 1987 to the area to co-own and operate the Chadwick Inn Bed and Breakfast in Sturgeon Bay with her partner, Patricia Ann Speedling.

Having lost her parents fairly early in their lives, Nancy was truly the loving matriarch of her family, keeping her brothers and sisters in line. She had a great sense of humor, only surpassed by a kind and generous spirit who was first to help anyone in need. Nancy loved music and singing. She also enjoyed playing cards, watching the stock market, and investing.

Those left to mourn Nancy’s passing are her partner, Pat Speedling; seven siblings and their families, Bob (Debbie) Brey, Mary (Mike) Cowan, Jim Brey, Jerry (Peggy) Brey, Anne Heckler, Sandy (Joe) Hoerning, Donnie (Anita) Brey; nieces and nephews; other family; Pat’s family: mother, Florence Speedling; four siblings, Jean (Mike) Erickson, Donald Speedling, Dennis Speedling, Phillip Speedling; Nancy’s two precious cats, Bink and Toby; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Claire Brey; sister-in-law, Karen Brey; Pat’s family: father, John Joseph Speedling, Sr.; and brother, John Joseph Speedling, Jr.

Nancy’s life celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 7, 2015, in the social hall of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay in the lower level of the church.
