Obituary: Patricia Florence (Veness) Herschberger

March 29, 1944 ~ August 18, 2022

Patricia Florence (Veness) Herschberger of Washington Island, cherished wife of John Herschberger, died Thursday, August 18, 2022.

Patty was born March 29, 1944, in Palo Alto, California. She lived in Indianapolis as a child before moving to Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated from Evanston Township High School.  She met the love of her life, John Herschberger, while on summer vacation on Washington Island and they married August 21, 1965.  She and John raised their three children on the Island where she taught synchronized swimming and swimming lessons, participated in the Music Festival, Sunshine Singers, church choir and WICHP and organized the children’s music camp. She was a pro on the computer – always making cards, designing posters, and mastering photoshop. She handled the bookkeeping and marketing for their business, Herschberger Home Improvement Company. Patty also enjoyed spending time with friends playing bridge, painting and jewelry making.  Most important to her was her family (one of her favorite titles was grandma “Nommy”).  She loved sunset boat rides together and never missed a sporting event, play, musical or concert.  In more recent years, Patty and John spent winters in McAllen, TX where they enjoyed activities with their many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John; son, Will; daughters, Robin (Bill) Margis and Heidi; her adored grandchildren, Shayla, Caden and Jace Cauldwell; sisters, Clare (Steve) Woodward and Laurie Veness; sisters-in-law, Ann (Butch) Young and Mary Ann Wonderly; several nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents, George and Katherine Veness; sister, Debby; father and mother-in-law, John Sr. and Helen Herschberger; and brother-in-law, Bob Herschberger.

A service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Washington Island Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 12:00 noon. A luncheon will follow at the church.
