Obituary: Phyllis V. Cross

August 16, 1931 ~ October 17, 2022

Phyllis V. Cross, 91 years, of Sturgeon Bay died Monday evening, October 17, 2022 at the Door County Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility with family at her side.

She was born August 16, 1931 in Kewaunee the daughter of the late Philip and Pauline (Paul) Ihlenfeldt. Phyllis graduated from Kewaunee High School before entering Oshkosh Business College where she completed her business education.  On January 24, 1953 she married Dexter R. Cross at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Norman near Kewaunee. They moved to Sturgeon Bay in 1990. Dex preceded her in death on March 7, 2013.

Phyllis was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.  She was a faithful woman who loved her grandchildren so much, watching them participate in sports, was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and those around her table. Phyllis was selfless, always looking for ways to help others.   She enjoyed decorating and home remodeling and was blessed with a keen eye for those interests. Always known to carry a hammer and nails in a Sucrets tin, Phyllis was at the ready just in case.

Survivors include her three children and their families, Russ (Leslie) Cross, Denise (Gerry) Banks, Diane Buechner all of Sturgeon Bay; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Philip Ihlenfeldt of Green Bay; and her sister, Emily Brusky of Kewaunee.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Philip and Pauline Ihlenfeldt; husband, Dexter; grandson, Jeffrey; son-in-law, William “Buck” Buechner; and two sisters, Doris Brennan, Alice Radley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church with Fr. Ryan Krueger, officiating with Deacon Mark Hibbs assisting. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Phyllis’ memory to the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Facility at Door County Medical Center, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
