OBITUARY: Raymond J. “Slim” Mattie

Raymond J. “Slim” Mattie, 92, of Sturgeon Bay, died at his home Dec. 12, 2018.  He was born May 14, 1926, in Sturgeon Bay to Arthur and Louise (Neimeyer) Mattie.  On June 18, 1949, he married Joyce Chase in Sturgeon Bay, she preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2003.

Slim served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II from 1944-1946.  He was stationed in Heidelberg Germany, along with Door County native Earl Staats, when General George S. Patton was killed.

Ray was a long-time employee of the City of Sturgeon Bay (45 years) and also did surveying work with Jerry Slavik for 25 years.  He and his wife enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida, country music festivals, and following the Packers.  Ray especially enjoyed get togethers with family and friends.

Survivors include seven children, Laurel Vanderhoof, Sturgeon Bay; Susan McKuen, Sturgeon Bay; Peggy Mattie, Milwaukee; Michael Mattie, Sturgeon Bay; Colleen (James) Hrubesky, Oconto; Rebecca (James) Hansen, Sturgeon Bay; and Julie Mraz (Scott Tebo), Sturgeon Bay; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Mattie, Green Bay.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce; one son-in-law John Vanderhoof; one great-granddaughter Mollie Hansen; two brothers, Arthur and Joseph; three sisters, Arlene, Betty (Phil) Sparacino, and Delores (Lloyd) Wesa.

Funeral services will be 11 am Monday Dec. 17, 2018, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay with Rev. Joel Sauer officiating.  Burial with military honors will be in Bayside Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 3-7 pm Sunday at the Forbes Funeral Home and from 10 am until the time of services at the church on Monday.  On-line condolences may be offered at forbesfuneralhome.com.
