Obituary: Robert Alan Larsen

Robert Alan Larsen, 65, of Sturgeon Bay, died at home on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

He was born November 5, 1956 in Grand Haven, Michigan, son of the late Otto Ranum and Carol Lillian (Cothran) Larsen. In 1966, the family moved to Javea (Alicante), Spain, and Robert graduated from the Escuela Internacional Lope de Vega school in Benidorm, Spain in 1974. After graduating, he moved back to the U.S. and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1980. Robert began his career as a civil engineer for Harnischfeger in Milwaukee before moving to Sturgeon Bay in 1990. Early in his career he was granted a patent for inventing a linkage lifting apparatus used on cranes. He then worked for Marine Travelift and was a chief engineer at the time of his retirement in 2017. On June 17, 1989, Robert and Donna Blaskie were wed in Grand Haven, a marriage from which they had two children. While his children were growing up, Robert was a youth soccer coach in Door County. He is an eleven-time marathoner. He also enjoyed woodworking, metalworking, boating, and being outdoors. Robert was proud to have designed and built the family’s home in Door County. He was also an avid Michigan Wolverines fan and could be heard saying, “Go Blue!” while crunching on sunflower seeds.

Robert will be missed by his daughter, Kelsey (Carlos) Anani; son, Andrew (Stef Carlson) Larsen; grandchildren, Reyza Ann Larsen and Kyrie Tidjo Anani; sister, Karen Cafmeyer; and former spouse and mother of his children, Donna Hoffmann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Carol Larsen; brother, David Larsen; and sister, Susan Larsen.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Grand Haven, Michigan at a later date. He will be laid to rest in Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
