Obituary: Sally Adelaide Kozlovsky

Sally Adelaide Kozlovsky, 86, of Sturgeon Bay, died in her sleep on June 24, 2017 at Anna’s Healthcare CBRF.

She was born February 4, 1931 in Northampton, MA, the daughter of Dr. Philip Shinn and Helen (Shaw) Shinn. Sally was raised by her two great-aunts with the death of her parents early in her life. She graduated from high school in Massachusetts and continued her studies with some college classes later on. As a young adult, she traveled the United States with her passenger manikin (for safety to give the appearance she wasn’t alone) and also overseas.

Sally was united in marriage to Donald Lee Kozlovsky on September 8, 1967 in Seattle, WA. They moved to Boise, ID, for Don’s work, and then to Illinois where Sally worked as a secretary at a veterinary clinic in Lisle. More than anything, though, Sally took care of her family and home. She and Don moved to Door County, WI 14 years ago and made their home in Sturgeon Bay. They also had property in Brussels which Don maintained as an apple and cherry orchard until his health prevented him from doing so. Sally and Don shared over 48 years of marriage together. He preceded her in death on August 22, 2016.

Sally was a resident at Anna’s Healthcare CBRF since February of 2013. The other residents and staff looked out for her and treated her like family.

Sally was raised in the Quaker Church earlier in life. She then attended the Methodist Church as her children attended church and other religious classes while living in Illinois. Most recently, Sally was invited by fellow resident friends to attend Mass at the chapel at Anna’s.

She enjoyed birdwatching, especially cardinals and chickadees. Sally also liked quilting and sewing. She had a sweet tooth and always liked having ice cream and pie. Her favorite restaurant was Al Johnson’s in Sister Bay, and she loved their Swedish Pancakes. Both, Sally and Don had an appreciation for music with her musical abilities and inspiration coming from both sides of her family, especially her great-aunts. She enjoyed listening to big band music by Glenn Miller amongst all other kinds of music. Sally was able to play both the piano and guitar.

Above all, “she was a really good mom.” Sally was kind-hearted, and although she wasn’t really verbal in her later years, she was able to communicate with you by how she smiled, which she did often. Sally’s family as well as her fellow resident friends and staff at Anna’s can all attest how “her smile could light a up a room.”

Her love will live on in the hearts of her daughter and son, Karla Grimes of Tucson, AZ and Brian Kozlovsky of Madison; two sisters-in-law, Doris Neuville of Sturgeon Bay; niece, Sarah Shinn of Franklin Park, PA (whose children Sally helped raise) and other nieces and nephews; other relatives; and her dear Anna’s Healthcare family.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Dr. Elliot (Shirley) Shinn; and sister-in-law, Marvel Kleidon.

Her life was honored with a memorial service on Thursday, June 29, 2017 in the chapel of Anna’s Healthcare CBRF in Sturgeon Bay with Pastor David Leistra officiating. Burial will be in Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King, WI (near Waupaca), beside her husband, Don.
