Obituary: Shirley G. Sykora

Shirley G. Sykora, 95, of Sturgeon Bay, died June 5, 2016 at Golden Living Center-Dorchester.

She was born November 10, 1920 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Gabriel and Ann Marie (Paulsen) Staalsen. Shirley was Administrative Assistant of the Home Based Health Care of Hines VA Hospital in Maywood, IL. On August 7, 1954, she married George Edward Sykora in Cicero, IL. They shared over 57 years of marriage together. He preceded her in death on February 17, 2012.

Shirley was a member of Fish Creek Community Church. She loved time spent with family and visits from friends. Shirley was an avid Cubs fan, loved parties, fishing with George, working in her yard, and chocolate…any chocolate! She was a confident and classy lady who was blessed to enjoy her sharp mind until her passing.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Rana (Gene) Pazelli of Green Lake, WI and Brooksville, FL; three granddaughters, Heidi (Mark) Miller of Park Ridge, IL, Hollis Hahn of Chicago, IL, Laura (Dave) Anderson of Appleton; five great-grandchildren, Carly Fenili, Madison Fenili, Hayley Miller, Lauren (Bjarni) Magnusson, Benjamin (Alysan) Anderson; one great-great-granddaughter, Nora Jane Anderson; and many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel and Ann Staalsen; husband; son, Ross (Dec. 17, 2008); and three infant brothers and three sisters, Olga Wiszowaty, Gudrun “Goodie” Swanson, Harriette Schultz.

A celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Fish Creek Community Church with Rev. Delmar Dahl officiating. Interment will be in the columbarium at Bayside Cemetery next to her husband, George.
Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday evening, June 10, 2016 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay, and at the church on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service.

“We would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and nurses at Pine Crest Village where Shirley spent the last few years. Thank you for making Mom’s stay feel like she was with family and at home.”
