Obituary: Walter I. Nehlsen

Walter I Nehlsen, 86, of Washington Island, died July 24, 2017 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents (Henry & Hulda Nehlsen) and his wife Evelyn. He is survived by their three children:  Marilee (Jeff) Nelson of S. Beloit, IL., David (Linda) Nehlsen of Whitewater, WI., Peter (Leila) Nehlsen of Washington Island and 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Walt and Ev retired to Washington Island in 1998 Walt had many hobbies; including working in the woods, working on tractors (John Deere only), and flying. He managed the Airport on Washington Island for many years. Before retirement, Walt had farmed and then ran his own electrical wiring business – Walt’s Electric in Whitewater, WI.

Walt had a special sensitivity for our serviceman, especially those who served and died in WWII. He was able to visit the American cemeteries at Normandy, France and Pearl Harbor over the past few years, both very meaningful experiences for him.

A Memorial Service will be held Aug. 12, 11 am, at Bethel Church on Washington Island. Lunch will be served immediately afterwards.

Memorials may be given in Walter’s name and will be used for several causes he fully supported, Including: WIChip (Service/Support on Washington Island) and Leader Dogs for the Blind.
