• BadgerCare Plus Core Plan enrollment was scheduled to be suspended by the state of Wisconsin at noon on Oct. 9. New applications will be added to a waiting list. The Department of Health Services began accepting applications for the plan on June 15 and was immediately overwhelmed with takers.

So far, 60,000 Wisconsin residents have applied for the health insurance program. BadgerCare Plus is designed for residents age 19 – 64 with no dependent children and a monthly income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must not have health insurance, or have had access to employer-provided health insurance in the previous 12 months to be eligible.

• Results of the citizen survey conducted by Door County in partnership with the Survey Research Center at UW-River Falls are available on the county Web site at http://www.co.door.wi.gov. Of 1,123 surveys mailed, 506 were returned completed, a response rate of 45 percent.

• The Door County Silent Sports Alliance re-elected its officers at its annual meeting Sept. 21 at Newport State Park. Bob Dickson was elected president, Karl Schroeder secretary, Paul Anschutz vice president, and Brian Merkel treasurer.

• Ellison Bay’s Wendi Ray finished 10th at the US Marathon Championships at the Twin Cities Marathon with a time of 2:38:58. The finish qualifies Ray as an “A Standard” runner for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials. Ilsa Paulson finished first with a time of 2:31:48.

• The Federal Trade Commission announced the strengthening of several standards on advertisers. Bloggers will now be forced to tell readers when they get money or in-kind services from a company they write about. Celebrities will have to disclose endorsement relationships with a company when they promote it on talk shows or social networking sites. Fitness and diet companies will no longer be able to say “results not typical” when making outlandish claims about weight loss or muscle gain. They will now be forced to say what typical results are.
