Opening of Third World Marketplace at Shepherd of the Bay

Third World Marketplace at Shepherd of the Bay opens June 22 at 6:30 pm as part of Olde Ellison Bay Days. Third World Marketplace is Shepherd of the Bay’s outreach program that supports farmers and artisans worldwide. The marketplace runs in conjunction with the talent show and ice cream social, also held at Shepherd of the Bay that evening.

Third World Marketplace features the work of artisans from around the world, including carved hardwood spoons and ladles from Los Cucharitos, a small coffee cooperative in Guatemala; and brightly colored aprons, potholders, bags, and beadwork from Mayaworks, a Guatemalan weaving cooperative.

The marketplace also offers textiles, beadwork, baskets, stone carvings, toys, games, musical instruments, and jewelry. The church will have a wide variety of fairly traded coffees, teas, chocolate bars, and snack bars available. The proceeds are given back to the artisans and their communities.

Third World Marketplace works with SERRV, a nonprofit, fair trade organization providing fair prices, vital income, training, grants, emergency assistance and other resources to partners in the U.S. and 32 developing countries. These services forge a long-term, sustainable, future for families and communities.
