Write On, Door County announces great opportunities to encourage aspiring young writers and their families to tell their stories this summer. A series of free and low-cost programs offer one-day and weeklong opportunities for all ages.
Sports and writing come together in an energizing week of physical play and word play, June 15 – 19, 10 am – 1 pm. Led by St. Norbert College sports editor Peter Dahl, participants will stretch their muscles and their minds by playing sports, then exploring their favorite sports through writing. The class is for students who will be entering grades 5 through 7 in the fall. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Tuition is $75 and enrollment is limited to 10 students.
Many Door County students had the opportunity to work with Katie McKy last year when she visited as a guest of the Door County Reading Council. McKy returns to Door County to lead two two-day creativity camps for students who will be in grades 3 through 8 in the fall. The workshop will be mobile with movement inside and outside and play will be the order of each day. The first session will be held July 13 and 14, 9 am – 1 pm, at Newport State Park. The second session will be held July 15 and 16, 9 am – 1 pm at Crossroads at Big Creek. Cost for each 2-day session is $40. Both sessions are identical; students may register for one or both. Both sessions are limited to 20 students.
Write On partners with the Door County Historical Society to present a series of free Sunday afternoon activities to encourage sharing stories across the generations. Just in time for Father’s Day, the first in the series will be held June 14 and will focus on “Writing About Fathers.” Participants are encouraged to bring a photo or memento to write about a father, grandfather, uncle, or other man who plays or played an important role in their lives. All programs start at 2 pm and are held at the Collins Learning Center, Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan Street. The programs are free, but registration is requested by calling 920.868.1457 or emailing [email protected].
