Organist Erik Suter Returns to Door County

Organist Erik Suter returns to Door County to present a concert of organ music at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church on June 23 at 7 pm. A native of Chicago and an internationally acclaimed musician, Suter served as organist at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC for nearly 10 years.

Suter brings his dynamism to Door County in a program of classics for pipe organ including works of J. S. Bach, Brahms, Mozart, and the American composer William Bolcom. All are invited to a reception after the concert to greet the artist.

“Door County is one of my favorite places, and I am excited to be returning there this summer,” Suter commented.

As a teenager Suter pursued his fascination with the pipe organ, when his family vacationed at their cottage in Door County. After packing a sack lunch and riding his bicycle for miles from the cottage to a church in Sturgeon Bay, he spent many hours practicing the organ. His early fascination with the instrument led to degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Yale University, and eventually to a career as a church musician and solo performer.

Suter will also be guest organist for the 8:30 am worship service at Shepherd of the Bay on June 23. The concert is open to the public at no charge. A free will offering will be collected. Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church is located at 11836 Highway 42 in Ellison Bay. For more information, call 920.854.2988.
