While you can always explore a trail or lake shore on your own, the calendar is dotted with guided hikes, wildlife tours, bird watching treks, and cross-country skiing meetups. Find a group bicycle ride, a naturalist session, or paddleboard tour and explore Door County’s natural wonders.

  • New Festival in Baileys Harbor, Feb. 7-9

    The Baileys Harbor Community Association is launching a new festival this year – The Winter Carnivale on Feb. 7 – 9. Friday night festivities include a bonfire, food, drinks and music at the Baileys Harbor Rec Park from 5 to 9 pm.

  • Groundhog Day Parade Closes with “Groundhog Stew”

    The third annual Ellison Bay Groundhog Day Parade is set for Feb. 2 at 2 pm. This year’s theme is “I Love A Parade!” Build a float, decorate your car, walk you dog, or just cheer from the sidelines – everyone is invited.

  • Snowshoe New Trails at Crossroads

    Crossroads at Big Creek is celebrating Groundhog Day by loaning skis and snowshoes to anyone who wants to celebrate the beauty of nature in winter. Of course, they loan skis every Sunday, at least when snow conditions allow.

  • Fish Creek Hosts Annual Winter Festival

    Fish Creek’s annual Winter Festival, Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, welcomes the entire family, locals and visitors to enjoy a wacky, fun-filled weekend of games, music, raffles and delicious food.

  • Fat Tire Biking at Newport

    Everyone knows about the hiking, skiing and snowshoeing opportunities throughout Door County, but id you know there is more than two miles of trail for fat tire winter biking at Newport State Park? “Right now there’s too much snow,” said Park Manager Michelle Hefty on Jan.

  • Candlelight Skiing at Whitefish Dunes State Park

    Join the Friends of Whitefish Dunes for a night of candlelight fun on Jan. 25 at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Ski, hike or snowshoe the groomed trails at the park.

  • Snow Kickball Debuts at Fish Creek Winter Festival

    Fish Creek’s Winter Festival, Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, is a family-friendly community event, for both locals and visitors. A large heated tent, located in Clark Park, will house games, music, raffles and food.

  • Spitting Honors Up for Grabs at Orchard Country Winery & Market

    Bundle up for winter fun at Orchard Country Winery & Market on Feb. 1 from 10 am – 5 pm. The farm market’s ninth annual Winter Wine and Cherry Fest will include complimentary wine and product tasting featuring the popular tart Montmorency cherry in celebration of National Cherry Month; plus an assortment of food and bakery items to purchase.

  • Candlelight Ski/Hike Takes Place during Fish Creek Winter Festival

    Peninsula State Park’s eighth annual candlelight ski/hike will take place during the Fish Creek Winter Festival, on Feb. 1 from 5:30 to 8 pm. Gail Anderson, a Peninsula Friends board member and one of the evening’s leaders, said, “The candlelight ski/hike is one of our favorite activities in the peninsula.

  • Frozen Tundra Wine Fest Set for Feb. 22

    Parallel 44’s Frozen Tundra Wine Fest is coming up soon – Feb. 22 from 12 – 6 pm. This outdoor wine festival features wine, live bands, gourmet food samples, food for purchase, tours, horse carriage rides and more.

  • Friends of Crossroads Loans Skis/Snowshoes

    When conditions allow, the trails at Crossroads at Big Creek will be open to the public. Hikers are asked to avoid the designated ski trails – snowshoers can explore anywhere except ski trails.

  • Crossroads Hosts First Hike in Ida Bay Forest

    There are three or four of majestic Eastern Hemlock trees at Crossroads at Big Creek, but in the Ida Bay Forest, which The Nature Conservancy recently donated to Crossroads, groves of hemlocks seem to be reproducing.

  • Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend is Jan. 18-19

    Bundle up and get out there for Wisconsin’s Winter Free Fishing Weekend, Jan. 18 – 19. Residents and nonresidents are welcome to fish anywhere in Wisconsin without a license or trout stamp on Free Fishing Weekend.

  • Winter Outing On Peninsula State Park Golf Course

    Everyone is invited to join the Friends of Peninsula State Park on Jan. 18 for a leisurely ski or snowshoe outing on the Peninsula State Park golf course.

  • Free Ski/Snowshoe Loans at Crossroads

    On Jan. 12 from 1 to 3 pm, the Friends of Crossroads at Big Creek group will loan ski and snowshoe equipment to all who want to get in touch with nature in winter.

  • Go On An Owl Prowl

    Mating season for owls takes place during some of the coldest months of the year, and it’s not unusual to hear them start their romantic hooting shortly after New Year’s Day.

  • Several Firsts for 2014 Polar Bear Plunge

    In addition to the 2014 Jacksonport Polar Bear Club’s 28th annual New Year’s Day plunge into Lake Michigan being the coldest on record (31.6 degree water and 2 degree air temperature), there were a couple of other firsts for the event:

  • Crossroads Offers Ski/Snowshoe Loans

    Crossroads at Big Creek will offer equipment loans Thursday through Sunday for the rest of the snowy season. Each Sunday if conditions are favorable, recreation equipment will be available from 1 – 3 pm.

  • County Snowmobile Trails Are Open

    With a winter wonderland descending on us the past week, all Door County snowmobile trails are now open. The South-East Zone opened Dec. 20 and is reported in fair condition.
