Packers’ Original Golden Girl in Pen Players Seminar

Peninsula Players Theatre’s series of free public seminars continues for its seventh fall season. Free seminars, providing inside looks at topics related to Lombardi by Eric Simonson (based on When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss). Fall seminars are held select Saturdays from 2:30 to 4 pm in the Pen Players’ rehearsal hall.

On Sept. 29, the seminar features Mary Jane van Duyse Sorgel, the Green Bay Packers original ‘Golden Girl.’ Sorgel’s illustrious Packers career began with her as majorette for the Packers band. A Chicago Tribune writer dubbed her ‘Green Bay’s Golden Girl’ in 1959, and the same year coach Vince Lombardi asked her to put together a team of cheerleaders.

Sorgel recruited girls from her dance studios and choreographed routines for the ‘Golden Girls’; Sorgel led them until 1972. Years later, Sorgel became famous for her many television appearances, including several with her dog on David Letterman’s late night talk shows.

Sorgel will show pictures and share stories from her history with the Packers.
