Packing Christmas Joy in a Shoebox

The final collection days for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts are coming up. The drop-off location at First Baptist Church of Sturgeon Bay collected 2,037 boxes last year and has taken in more than 23,000 since 2004. The shoebox gifts are distributed in 110-plus countries around the world.

New items for a boy or girl aged 2-4 years, 5-9 years or 10-14 years are placed in a standard-size cardboard or plastic shoebox. Items include school supplies, toys, clothing, stuffed animals and hygiene items such as bar soap, washcloths and toothbrushes. A picture or note to the child receiving the box can also be included. Avoid packing liquids, perishables, glass, items that melt, war-related items and used items.

A $10-per-box donation is suggested and can be paid at samaritanspurse.org. Online donors are able to print a label to track the final destination of boxes, and there is also a virtual shoebox-packing option on the website.

Shoeboxes will be accepted at First Baptist Church of Sturgeon Bay, 610 N. 5th Avenue, on Nov. 18, 5-7 pm, and Nov. 19-20, 12-2 pm. Find out more at samaritanspurse.org.
