This season, Martinez Studio is hosting a special weekend exhibit of work by returning Door County native, Neva Sills. A reception will be held on Saturday, July 24 from 2 – 6 pm.

Painted or drawn on paper, Sills cuts, arranges, and rearranges images to explore the constructed aspects of nature and art. Utilizing a mixture of painterly approaches – from realism to expressionism to graffiti – bodies are replaced by flowers and arms hold onto squiggles that fly into the sunset.

Fascinated by humankind’s interest in travel and engagement with place, Sills gleans imagery from vacation memorabilia, as well as the circus and theater. Printed ephemera such as postcards and brochures are sourced as souvenirs of voyages past, present, or future.

“Film, theater, and the circus inform this work,” said Sills, “as each has the potential of propelling ideas and fantasies of places unknown or seemingly unattainable.”

The Guest Artist Weekend Exhibit runs from Friday, July 23 to Monday, July 26. Martinez Studio, open 10 am – 5 pm daily, is located one mile south of Jacksonport on Hwy. 57. For more information call 920.823.2154.
