Painting with Fire at The Flying Pig

“The Vase of Flowers”

Jeff Greening of Green Bay has worked with metal since he was 18. Twenty-four years later, he continues his career in stainless steel specialty work.

Greening’s artistic creations, such as “The Vase of Flowers,” grace many private and public gardens. “The Vase of Flowers” is just over 20 feet tall and weighs approximately 2,000 pounds. The flowers are made of 18-gauge stainless steel with steel rods as their stems and a carbon steel base. After coloring the flowers with heat, Greening uses a grinder to apply brushstrokes on the flower petals.

He uses TIG welding, the cleanest type of weld, on the flowers. Greening has developed a talent for applying the precise amount of heat in the right amount of time on certain steel thicknesses to form his own controllable color palette.

“All the years of polishing all the cool colors off from welding stainless steel inspired me to develop a color palette for coloring stainless that I call painting with fire,” says Greening.

The sculpture is for sale and on display in the gardens at The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace, N6975 Highway 42, 2 miles south of Algoma. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
