“Panic” Character Inspired by Hitchcock

Actor Gary Houston performs in “Panic,” on stage at Peninsula Players through October 17.

Panic, a new thriller by Joseph Goodrich, is now on stage at Peninsula Players through October 17. The play features the character Henry Lockwood, inspired by the film legend, Alfred Hitchcock.

Hitchcock had a dark humor and dry wit, especially about murder. He explored his own fears and used them in his films. “Fear isn’t difficult to understand,” Hitchcock said. “After all, weren’t we all frightened as children? Nothing has changed since Little Red Riding Hood faced the big bad wolf. What frightens us today is exactly the same sort of thing that frightened us yesterday. It’s just a different wolf. This fright complex is rooted in every individual.”

In Panic, Henry Lockwood, “the Sultan of Suspense,” finds himself embroiled in blackmail, betrayal, and murder while in Paris for the opening of his new film. Lockwood and his wife Emma find themselves living through one of their screenplays when he is accused of a serious crime.

Curtain times for Panic are Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7pm, except for 4 pm Sunday matinees on September 26 and October 17. Group and individual tickets are available. Individual ticket prices range from $29 to $36; there are no performances on Mondays.
