Paper Birds Play Woodwalk Aug 18

Woodwalk Concert Series is proud to present Paper Birds in concert Aug. 18 at 7 pm. Paper Birds is a cross-country pop-up band fronted by two successful songwriters in their own right: Claudia Russell and Katie Dahl.

Russell is a veteran of California’s Americana music scene who has won songwriting honors from Boston to Austin. Known for her nimble, expressive voice and tightly knit songs, Russell brings grace and spunk to an eclectic array of music. Door County is familiar with her performances at American Folklore Theater (Northern Sky Theater) including Old Friends, Goodnight, Irene and more.

Dahl is gaining a reputation as one of the Midwest’s best young songwriters, writing keenly literate songs planted deep in the ground of her Wisconsin home. She is also a playwright whose musical Victory Farm premiered to high acclaim in 2012 and has since been made into a live cast album.

Fold in Dahl’s husband Rich Higdon on bass and percussion and Russell’s husband Bruce Kaplan (on mandolin and guitar), and you have a musical outfit adept in creating music that is at once reflective, quirky and poignant – and an onstage dynamic that is genuinely warm and lively. The Paper Birds quartet is as magic as a blue moon.

House band Small Forest opens. Call 920.629.4877 or 920.495.2928 to reserve an outside table for a picnic dinner at 5:30 pm before the show. Drinks and treats will be for sale. Tickets are $20 cash only at the door. Woodwalk Gallery is located at 6746 Cty G, a bit south of Egg Harbor.
