Paper Shop Uses Door County Natural Elements

Ferns are embedded in the cattail by Dana and Barbara Smith.

Mother and daughter, Dana and Barbara Smith of Ellison Bay, recently participated in a three-day workshop at the Paper Shop in Woodwalk Gallery.

During “The Wild Plants of Door County” workshop, students made paper out of cattail leaves – beautiful woven, translucent sheets. They embedded sweet clover and other pressed and dried flowers and plants from the fields, suspending them in an airy atmosphere of cattail fiber.

The students noticed how the natural colors laid side by side created their own subtle palette. Each student framed a piece of paper the last day of the workshop.

The Paper Shop will be open into October. For more information call Kirsten Christianson at 920.559.0585.
