Parents in Partnership Arrives for 2016-17 School Year

Raising a child with special needs is something most parents are not prepared for and can be a daunting job. Parents in Partnership (PIP) can provide help to these families by providing a solid foundational block of support. Through discussion, activities and listening to speakers from around the state, the program strengthens positive communication, leadership and collaboration skills, as well as awareness of how to access and use the abundance of resources for families who have a child with special needs.

Coming to Door County for the 2016-17 school year, PIP is for parents with a child age 6-14 who has an Individualized Education Plan. It is a statewide program in which groups of parents and other caregivers meet together five times a year to share their family’s stories, challenges, joys and triumphs of raising their child.

PIP began about 18 years ago as a project in the Milwaukee area. Since then it has grown to be offered in many other locations around the state. This year it will be held in at Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor. The training, room and all meals are provided free of charge.

Sessions will be held the weekends of Nov. 4 & 5, Dec. 2 & 3, Jan. 13 & 14, Feb. 24 & 25, ending with March 31 & April 1. They start at 5 pm on Friday and end at 4 pm on Saturday. Parents must attend all five weekends. Registration is now open; the program is capped at 25. PIP is inclusive of all families.
