Publishers and readers think of fiction and nonfiction as being worlds apart. But there are many similarities. The challenge comes in recognizing the tools you use and the experience you gain as a nonfiction writer and then learning how to apply those to fiction writing.

After a successful professional career as a staff writer for Reader’s Digest and freelancer with articles in national print and online publications as well as books by mainline publishers, Patricia Skalka made the leap into fiction. Her first novel, Death Stalks Door County, published by Terrace Books/The University of Wisconsin Press, introduces the popular Dave Cubiak Door County Mysteries. Death at Gills Rock, the second book in the series, is due out this summer.
