Eight of today’s preeminent sculptors – who have embraced books as their medium of choice – will display their cutting-edge works in the exhibition, “The Book as Sculpture,” August 13 through September 25 at Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek. An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held Friday, August 13, from 5 – 7 pm.

“The Book as Sculpture” brings together the works of sculptors throughout the United States and features an installation by Melissa Jay Craig, delicate jewelry by Francesca Vitali, carvings by Brian Dettmer, and paintings by Michael Stilkey.

Two of the featured artists will reveal the process behind their works. Shawn Sheehy will demonstrate the creation of his pop-up books through a video installation. Daniel Essig’s “behind the scenes” perspective comes forth in both a gallery talk on August 19, from 5 – 6 pm, and a five-day workshop, “Wood Covers, Mica Pages: The Book Reconsidered,” taking place August 16 – 20. The workshop is open to all levels. Reservations are required for both the workshop and the gallery talk.

In conjunction with “The Book as Sculpture,” the school’s Madeline Tourtelot Archives will display related works from its permanent collection. The Peninsula School of Art Archives is open on Wednesdays from 10 am – 2 pm or by appointment.
