Peninsula Singers Celebrate with “Hallelujah! It’s Christmas!”

The Peninsula Singers are ready to bring yuletide cheer to the Door County community with two choral performances of “Hallelujah! It’s Christmas!” Artistic Director Merle Colburn selected a program to challenge and display the talents of the fifty-plus volunteer choir and accompanist Janet Anderson. The New Day Singers, an ensemble within the choir recently seen in concert with the Peninsula Symphonic Band, will be featured.

The concert will open with “Gloria Fanfare” featuring trumpeters Mary Nickel and John Nielsen, followed by “Midnight Clear,” “The Darkest Midnight in December” and five choruses from Handel’s “The Messiah.”

Assistant Director Lauren Gilmore will lead the choir in “O Magnum Mysterium,” and Kurt Colburn will direct while his father, Merle, sings the baritone solo in John Rutter’s arrangement of “Wexford Carol.” Other carols and songs include “Still, Still, Still,” “I Saw Three Ships,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” and several other songs of the season.

Concerts are scheduled for 7 pm at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay on Dec. 8, and 3 pm at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay on Dec. 9.

The Peninsula Singers depend on contributions to pay for music, space rental, equipment, director and accompanist salaries and other incidental expenses. The Algoma United Methodist Church is a sponsor of the concerts.

The choir is open to all who enjoy singing; there are no auditions, and twelve rehearsals lead up to each concert.
