Peninsula State Park 2010 Like to Hike Pin Available

Peninsula State Park‘s 2010 Like to Hike pin, the eighth in an exclusive series, highlights the Niagara Escarpment – a 650-mile rock ridge that formed 420-million years ago as mud on the floor of an ancient sea. The mighty bluffs rising along the Green Bay side of the Door Peninsula are a portion of the escarpment, which is being recognized statewide in 2010 after legislators proclaimed 2010 as the Year of the Niagara Escparment.

The park’s 2010 hiking pin, a component of its Like to Hike program, features Peninsula’s Eagle Bluff with a bat in the foreground. Bats in Door County, as well as birds, use the Niagara Escarpment as a visual migration corridor.

Those who participate in five silent sports (hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc.) at Peninsula may purchase the pin at half-price ($3). The full price is $6. Peninsula also gives many pins away to volunteers, for example, scout groups who pick garlic mustard in the spring.

Participating in Like to Hike is easy. Simply track your activities at Peninsula on a free hiking log available on request at park headquarters. Some of those activities could even be logged from the upcoming Candlelight Ski or Cross-country Ski Clinic hosted by the Friends of Peninsula State Park in early February.

The public is invited to Peninsula State Park’s annual Cross-Country Candlelight Ski on Saturday, February 6, from 5:30 – 8 pm. The ski begins at Lot 5 off of Highland Road. (Please, no walking or dogs on the ski trails.) Ski a one-mile double-tracked loop by the glow of hundreds of luminaries. Afterwards, enjoy hot cocoa and cookies near a bonfire. Weather permitting. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required. Purchase at Park Headquarters before 5 pm, February 6.

Or, join Peninsula “Friends” Nick and Gail Anderson on Sunday, February 7, from 10:30 am –12:30 pm for the Cross-country Ski Clinic. Learn the gentle sport of cross-country skiing, or brush up on your skills. Meet in the warming shelter next to the maintenance garage. Enter at Lot 5 off of Highway 42. Please provide your own skis and poles. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The cross-country ski clinic is open to the public but a state park vehicle sticker is required. Trail passes ($4 daily/$20 annual) are not required to participate in this ski clinic.
