Personal Checks Stolen From Door County Mailboxes

The Door County Sheriff’s Office has responded to several forgery/fraud calls regarding personal checks that have been “washed.” Suspects have removed personal checks from mailboxes and put the checks through a process to remove the ink on the check. Once the ink is removed, they put their name on the check and cash it.

To deter fraud, the sheriff’s office is recommending that anyone in the community who’s writing a personal check should use gel-ink pens because the ink is much harder to remove. The sheriff’s office also recommends taking mail with personal checks directly into the post office and to avoid using the USPS blue boxes.
