Pet Adoptions Halted at Door County Humane Society Campus

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) has been forced to make some changes to its hours and services in response to COVID-related staff and volunteer shortages.

Effective Jan. 3, WHS will offer adoptions only from its Milwaukee and Green Bay campuses until further notice, although additional animals will be available to adopt directly from foster homes. Adoption services will not be available at the Racine, Ozaukee or Door County campuses. Available animals at those campuses will be transported to Milwaukee, Green Bay or foster homes for adoption placement.

WHS remains open at all locations for surrender intake by appointment, as well as stray intake in the counties in which WHS is the contracted agency to care for stray animals.

To help keep shelter populations low, WHS is also looking for foster parents to open their hearts and homes to dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals. Some of those animals may need time to recover from an illness or injury, or simply go to foster to make more room at the shelter for new arrivals.

WHS also offers the Rachael Ray Nutrish Foster Program: a foster-facilitated adoption program in which foster parents are trained to offer adoption services, thus freeing up staff members. To sign up, visit wihumane.org/foster, watch the online orientation and fill out the foster-parent form. A staff member will be in touch to get you started.

Information on adoption hours and WHS services are available at wihumane.org.
