Petra van Nuis Quartet Performs Jazz Concert at UUF

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host a jazz concert with the Petra van Nuis Quartet of Chicago on May 19 at 3 pm. Van Nuis will be perform an eclectic mix of classic jazz and standards accompanied by guitarist Andy Brown, double bassist Joe Policastro, and drummer Bob Rummage.

Petra van Nuis is known as one of the keepers of the flame when it comes to the fading art of jazz singing. A protégé of Chicago’s “First Lady of Jazz,” pianist/singer Judy Roberts, van Nuis has studied jazz in the old-fashioned way, at the feet of the masters. Her group has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She regularly performs at top venues such as the Green Mill, Andy’s Jazz Club, and the Jazz Showcase and has been featured at the Chicago Jazz festival, Jazz at Chautauqua, and the Cedar Basin Jazz Festival, to name but a few.

Her sidemen have collectively performed and recorded with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Barbara Streisand, Howard Alden, Jeff Hamilton, Diane Schuur, Kurt Elling, the Four Freshmen, George Shearing, and Lou Rawls. The trio is known for its sympathetic accompaniment and virtuosic improvisation.

The concert is free and open to the public. A reception with the musicians will follow the performance.
