Photography Duo

“Morning Fog” by Arlene Stanger.

A husband and wife photography team is featured in the Door County Art League Gallery for June 6 – 12. For Steven and Arlene Stanger of Baileys Harbor their artistic vision is as varied as the lenses through which they interpret the world. While Steven focuses on abstract renderings using a digital SLR camera, Arlene employs film as well as digital cameras and even her iPhone in her nature and architectural studies.

Reflections and geometric angles are prominent subject matter for Steven who uses both multiple in-camera exposures and a vortoscope attachment (for producing kaleidoscope-type effects) to create abstractions from reflected objects and architectural details.

A Holga camera that uses medium format film is the tool of choice for Arlene in rendering moody landscapes. “I love the unpredictability of the resulting image and am always excited to see the end result,” said Arlene.

After taking classes in iPhone photography, Arlene has used her iPhone and associated apps for creating similar effects. The retired microbiologist said she is “continually searching for interesting shapes and light qualities that hopefully will elicit an emotional response from those viewing my images.”

The Door County Art League Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, 11 am to 3 pm. It is located in the courtyard of the Top of the Hill shops in Fish Creek, at the corner of Highway 42 and Spring Road. For more information, visit doorcountyartleague.org.
