“Pigskin Glass” on Display at The Santa Fe Shop

Artists Manuel Silva and Robert Ornelas have created decorative glass plates and platters called “Pigskin Glass,” now available at the Santa Fe Shop & Gallery in Fish Creek. Silva has over 20 years of experience and is the third generation of his family to work with decorative glass. He has worked with Ornelas since 2002; their studio is located in the San Leon area outside of Houston, Texas.

“Pigskin Glass” received its name because the backings of the pieces were originally made from pigskin leather. The glass is environmentally friendly, made of recycled window glass along with water-based paint, foil, and screen mesh.

The pieces are created by first placing the backing material in a mold. Decorative material is applied to the backing and glass is placed on top. It is then heated in a kiln where the heat causes the colors to mix and ‘slump’ the glass to seal the piece.

The Santa Fe Shop & Gallery, open daily, is located at 4147 Main Street in Fish Creek. For more information call 920.868.4300.
