Pioneers Win, Vikings Lose Girls Hoops Openers

Two of Door County’s varsity girls basketball teams opened the season with non-conference games Tuesday, when one won and the other lost.

Sevastopol 53, Suring 30

Bailey Rikkola scored 16 points, Naomi Rikkola added 15 points and Libby Ash scored nine more to lead Sevastopol to a 53-30 victory at Suring.

Ash accounted for three of the five three-point baskets for the Pioneers, who led 28-14 at halftime.

Sevastopol returns to action Monday with another non-conference game at Two Rivers.

Two Rivers 54, Gibraltar 34

Gibraltar trailed by 10 points at halftime en route to a 54-34 loss at Two Rivers.

Betsy Lecy led the Vikings with eight points, followed by Mikala Gorham with seven and Quincy Chomeau with six.

The Vikings host their next non-conference game Friday against Hilbert.

The county’s other two girls basketball teams play their first games Friday, when Southern Door travels to Wausaukee and Sturgeon Bay hosts Chilton.
