Pirate Paintings

“No Prey No Pay” by Don Maitz.

The unique exhibit of 19 pirate paintings by renowned Florida artist Don Maitz will end its run at the Door County Maritime Museum on Oct. 19. The museum’s “Missions of the U.S. Coast Guard” exhibit will also conclude that day.

A painter of remarkable maritime authenticity, imagination and wit, artist Don Maitz’s beautiful portraitures breathe new life into piracy during the days of sail. His sense of adventure, sometimes spiced with humor, adds depth to the careful research and extraordinary attention to detail found in his works. The iconic character Maitz created for Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is his most widely recognized work in a professional arena that includes National Geographic publications.

The paintings on display at the Door County Maritime Museum dramatically depict a variety of aspects of a pirate’s life. The art is housed in a unique fort-like gallery that is a component of the museum’s larger “Pirates—Ship to Shore” exhibit.

The Missions of the Coast Guard exhibit features 15 original paintings from the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program along with informational panels, models, photographs and selected items from the museum’s collection.

The art depicts the day-to-day activities of Coast Guard men and women and includes works highlighting the Marine Safety Detachment Sturgeon Bay and the Cutter Mobile Bay.

The Door County Maritime Museum is located between the downtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay’s waterfront at 120 N. Madison Ave. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. For more information visit dcmm.org.
