Plein Air From the Air

Editor’s Note: Check your calendar. It’s April Fools Day. Unfortunately, Kasten Topelmann will not be painting from a glass box suspended from a helicopter today, though it would be really cool if he was.

On Sunday, April 1, artist Karsten Topelmann of Ephraim, will be painting scenes of Door County Plein Air style from the air in his specially-constructed, clear “sky box” suspended from a helicopter.

Topelmann plans to launch at 11 am from Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay. Onlookers could spot him at 11:10 am painting above the historic Michigan Street steel bridge.

Proceeding north he will be above the new Marina Park in Egg Harbor at noon to paint the skyline from up high. Next, Topelmann will be painting in his sky box over Founders Square in Fish Creek at 12:45 pm.

Ephraim is scheduled at 1:30 pm, as Topelmann attempts to paint the famous village hovering above Harborside Park, and the last chance to see Topelmann in his sky box will be at 2:15 pm right above Sister Bay’s new Waterfront Park across from Al Johnson’s restaurant.
