Poetry Trail Showcases New Poems

New poems are gracing the Newport State Park Poetry Trail. The current exhibit, which will run through the month of June, features the works of 19 high school students.

Ten of the students are winners and honorable mentions in an annual statewide student contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. These poems will appear in the 2013 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar which will soon be available for purchase.

Seven other students featured are Gibraltar High School students who participated in a poetry workshop led by Dr. Phil Hansotia as a part of the Hardy Gallery’s Exposure To Creativity program. All these poems are in response to the prompt, “Looking for America.” Two additional poems were submitted by other Gibraltar students.

Now in its third year, the poetry trail at Newport State Park begins across the parking lot from the Welcome Center. From July through September poems by members of the critique group, Word Women, will be displayed.

The trail is a joint project of local poet groups and the Newport Wilderness Society. The public can contribute toward the cost of presenting the poetry displays by sending a check to The Newport Wilderness Society, P.O. Box 187, Ellison Bay, WI 54210.

Newport State Park is located on County NP, east of Highway 42 near Gills Rock. A state park vehicle sticker is required for admission. For more information call 920.854.2500.
