Polka into Spring at the Accordion Fest

The spring 2009 Door County accordion polka fest will be held Sunday, May 10 from 12:30 – 4:30 pm at the Institute Saloon Dancehall, located on Hwy 57 north of Sturgeon Bay. Polka playing musicians and the public are both invited to attend this event.

This is the fifth accordion featured event to be held in the last three years, and all the previous events have been a great success. The central theme is the sound of button accordions and concertinas, accompanied by backup instruments including drums, tuba, guitar, bass and more.

Different button accordion and concertina players, ranging from amateur to professional, will perform on stage throughout the afternoon, creating a variety of sounds. The audience can dance to or listen to polkas, waltzes, cajun, schottische, and even some country songs played to the polka beat.

The goal of this semi-annual event is to revive interest in button accordion and concertina playing here in Door County. The show will provide an opportunity for both accomplished and amateur players to join on stage and bring out the wonderful sound of these old time reed instruments that provided listening enjoyment to our native families for more than a hundred years.
