Pond Hockey Tournament Moves to Sister Bay

Unsafe ice conditions push the event to the land

The Door County Pond Hockey Tournament will go on in a new location Saturday, Feb. 8. Organizers announced Jan. 30 that unsafe ice conditions on Kangaroo Lake have forced them to move the location to the Sister Bay Sports Complex.

“This winter’s inconsistent weather has made the ice on Kangaroo Lake not just unplayable, but unsafe for players and spectators to venture onto,” said tournament founder Brian Fitzgerald. “Fortunately we’ve found an alternative location, and the Village of Sister Bay is working diligently with us to stage the event on the grounds of the Sister Bay Sports Complex.”

Games will be played throughout the day and into the evening under the lights at the complex, and a shuttle will transport fans between the tournament and Sister Bay restaurants and shops just a few minutes away.

Team check-in will still be held Friday, Feb. 7, beginning at 6 pm, at Door County Brewing Co., the event’s sponsor.

“We’re disappointed that we won’t be on the lake, but we’re still going to have a great event with the help of Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay,” Fitzgerald said. “And we’re excited to play our first tournament games under the lights.”

Organizers are still looking for volunteers to assist with scorekeeping. Volunteers will go home with great tournament swag for working a five-hour shift, or more apparel for longer shifts. To volunteer, email Jordan Burress at [email protected], or call 920.421.4680.

Fans can enjoy the games beginning at 8 am – and all day long until the final games are played at 8:45 pm. Northern Door Rotary will be selling brats, chili and more food on-site, and there will be beer and other beverages for sale in the warming tent.
