Pond Hockey Tournament Registration Nearly Full

The Door County Pond Hockey Tournament is nearly full.

A record 48 teams have now signed up for the Feb. 9 event on Kangaroo Lake in Baileys Harbor.

Pond hockey is a modified version of hockey that’s usually played on lakes, ponds and streams. Games are played on smaller rinks than in regular hockey, with short sideboards, no goalies and just four players to a side. Teams will compete on 15 rinks in six divisions as they fight for the coveted Stanley Thermos trophy.

The tournament has grown from just five teams in 2013 to the popular event it is today, but it’s not just for the players. A warming tent will be set up on the lake where spectators can enjoy food, beverages, funnel cakes and heaters. There will also be a pleasure rink open for kids and spectators to skate on.

Baileys Harbor businesses and restaurants will be open for the weekend, with live music at Door County Brewing Co. Taproom and Music Hall and at Maxwelton Braes. Scorekeepers – who go home with event merchandise – are still needed to serve shifts.Visit doorcountypondhockeytournament.com to learn more, or email [email protected] to volunteer.
