Pond Hockey Tourney Returns

Baileys Harbor will take hockey back to the pond again when the second annual Door County Pond Hockey Tournament takes place on Kangaroo Lake Feb. 7, 2015. Registration opens Sept. 1.

Pond hockey is a pickup version of hockey, with four players to a side and no goalies. The goals are small wooden boxes with two small holes in them. Pond hockey is a game of finesse, with no checking or pads.

Tournament founder Brian Fitzgerald worked with the Baileys Harbor Community Association to get the event off the ground in 2014. After a great inaugural tournament that saw the DC Pickers crowned champion, organizers are planning for an even larger event in 2015.

Eight rinks will be cleared on the lake, including one for family and recreational play. A beer and food tent will be erected on the ice as well.

The tournament will include six divisions in 2015. Those divisions include Men’s Open A (Pro, college, or junior level players), Men’s Open B (high school, organized, or recreational players), Classic (40 and over), Legends (50 and over), Women’s Open, and Juniors (age 12 – 16).

The event is organized by the Peninsula Pacers, the group behind the Door County Half Marathon, Door County Beer Festival, and the Peninsula Century Ride.

Rosters, waivers, and $280 team registration fees must be submitted by Feb. 2. Visit doorcountypondhockey.com for more information and to download a registration form, or email Brian Fitzgerald at [email protected].
