Popelka Trenchard Glass Hosts “Ekphrastic Writing” Write On Workshop

Write On, Door County offers an afternoon workshop on writing in response to visual art with visiting poet and author Anne-Marie Oomen. “Ekphrastic Writing” will take place Oct. 29, 1 – 4 pm, in the studios of Popelka Trenchard Glass, 64 S. 2nd Street, Sturgeon Bay.

About the workshop, Oomen says, “Through the ages, looking at art has become a special and lively way of coming to writing. Using visual art as an inspiration for our writing seems to have developed with civilization and has a long and vital history. Examples abound, called ekphrastic writing, which means roughly, ‘to give voice to the mute.’ Thus, many writers have explored this inspired genre by writing in the presence of art and artists…

“In this class, we will spend time looking at works of art, observing how they inspired writers to write better, more creative works. This class is designed for both beginning and experienced writers, and will appeal to both poets and prose writers, to people interested in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.”

Oomen is writer-in-residence at Write On, Door County. She is author of the memoirs, Love, Sex, and 4-H, Pulling Down the Barn and House of Fields; the collection An American Map: Essays; and a full-length collection of poetry, Uncoded Woman.

Tuition is $45. Some scholarships are available. For more information, contact 920.868.1457. For more information, visit writeondoorcounty.org or call 920.868.1457.
